THE LAND FAMILY

He's here and he's precious!

Evan arrived at our hotel around 11:30am.  He was escorted by one of his nannies, a orphanage representative and a driver.  He is adorable!  I started to tear up when I saw him.  His nanny told him that I was his "mama" and he immediately started crying!  We all walked over to a sitting area that was in the lobby.  A woman who worked for the hotel ran our video camera for us.  They instructed us to sit down and tried to hand Evan to me but he would not have it.  They handed Evan to Brian and he stopped crying until I sat down next to him.  Brian moved him to the side opposite of me and once again he stopped crying.  The driver wanted to take our picture and insisted that Evan sit between us.  As soon as Brian moved him between us he started crying again.  We tried giving him a bottle that I had prepared for him and some snacks.  He would take snacks from my hand and from Daniel's but I don't think he ate any of them.  They took the
picture with Evan crying but it turned out pretty good.  After a while the nanny disappeared and we moved everything to the hotel's business center.

In the business center I signed some paperwork and they answered a few questions about Evan.  We still do not have permission to visit the orphanage but we should know something tomorrow.  They told me that Evan's chinese name, Sheng, means "sunrise".  According to them he loves to play with toys and likes TV.  They said that he would get to play in the morning and the afternoon.  The nurse in the morning would teach him things.  She didn't know when he started walking but did say that his first word was "mama".  He does not like water so they add sugar to it so he will drink it.  He likes sweet things and so does the rest of his family!

We are back in our room now and Daniel is sleeping.  Brian is holding Evan in his arms.  Evan will give me a quick look and then turn away.  I will take care of his basic needs by changing his diaper, feeding him and whatever else he might need.  This technique worked well with Daniel.  I will admit that I am a little jealous, but I just want to do what is best for him right now.  He has been making a lot of eye contact with Brian and that is a good sign.  He is even cuter in person than his pictures!  Tomorrow we will sign more paperwork to make the adoption legal.

Before Evan arrived, Daniel gave me a big hug and said "I love you, Happy Mother's day mommy".  I told him that it is Mother's Day because I am becoming a mother to another boy today.  He replied "who"?  Daniel fell asleep while we were signing paperwork so he really hasn't interacted with Evan that much.  I am looking forward to seeing it happen tonight.

  4. Kirsten & Brian, Evan is so cute - just looks like a perfect fit for your family! He really does look like Daniel's brother. It sounds like the transition is going very well; of course there is some grieving but he is bonding with Brian and you both in his own way. We are so happy to share this journey with you guys. Your posts are wonderful! God bless, Tricia, Eric & Girls

  5. Kirp - I'm so so happy for you and Brian. Evan is so blessed to have such wonderful and Godly parents (and an ornery big brother to look up to). Can't wait until you come home and I get to meet him. Love, Cap

  6. Kirsten and Brian - I am so glad you made it safely and that you had some great adventures w/ sweet Daniel in Hong Kong and Beijing. And now...you are a family of four! What a precious little guy he is and how blessed you all are to be on this journey together. And you! what a blessing you are to be loving that sweet baby right where he is today, and in the way that "he" needs it, which might not have been the way that you were planning or hoping for. Pat yourself on the back little mama, it's not easy, but I am really proud for you and excited at the joy you've shared in your writing.
